  Hi all , so the standard engine for a cyclekart is the gx200, are there other options out the for example motorbike engines, i ask this because i have a 125cc moped engine with cvt transmission the engine is rated at about 12hp , so it has more horse power than the gx200 engine but less capacity so it might be an equal alternative !!!!, i was thinking of taking the wheel off the output shaft and fitting a sprocket to run a chaindrive to the axle .. How would this go down in the cyclekart world !!!?.

Hi Nic, if you go to the section of the forum which is titled "Start Here" you will find the subsection with guidelines http://www.cyclekartsgb.com/what-is-a-cyclekart/what-is-a-cyclekart-and-rulesguidelines.
This will give  you what was our opening of the "traditional" guidelines to accommodate your thoughts. Remember it's not supposed to be a horsepower race :)

Chris Brown's Morgan uses a scooter engine, 125 I believe.

As Chris had already built his Morgan the GB guidelines were framed they are at variance with the rest of the world so as to be inclusive :)

In Argentina they use all sorts of engines and gearboxes.   I quite fancy building a Cyclekart type of vehicle with a different, probably old, engine in it.

Having organised some events this year I know insurers and other organisations are keen to know there’s a defined formula that people stick to.

My Morgan uses the complete back end of a 125cc scooter, started off as 7.5hp, but the exhaust change has probably boosted it to about 8. I really must get back to it, other aspects of life have got in the way this year.

Having done a little bit of looking around on the internet i think my 125cc lintex engine is probably about 9HP , so it should not be too powerfull and i can play around with the sprocket sizes as i plan to use a peerless diff for the axle..

The GY6 Honda clones are generally under the 10hp mark. It's only the brands like Honda, Yamaha, Piaggio that get over that, up to 15hp in some cases.

Hi Nic, I had a look at a Lintex 125 engine on ebay and I can't see a reason why you should have a problem fitting one into a CK chassis. The position of the output shaft with the drum brake could give you a few options of engine position. Those moped engines are a similar layout to quad bike ones and that gives people options to use one of those maybe. It looks like its gonna be a very interesting, fun build and I look forward to your youtube videos.

I'd recommend putting a disc brake on the rear axle rather than using the drum. Mine has the drum brake, and it's uninspiring, I'll look at fixing the cable down first, but I might end up converting it to hydraulic, at the moment it's spongy.

My lintex engine has a disk brake on the rear wheel, also has the option to fit drum brakes but you would be putting more strain on the chain , if the chain broke you would lose your brakes !!, so yep i will be going for twin discs on the rear axle as am useing a peerless axle,
