Extending Bowden cable
« on: 14 November 2020, 06:38:25 pm »
Has anyone got a neat design or know of products for extending a Bowden cable?   I thought there would be loads but I can’t find any.

Not sure if you need to extend inner, outer or both? But generally attempting to join control cables is never going to be as good as replacing it with one of the required length.

As Chris says; there are temporary inner cable extension kits available on Fleabay.

Mainly sold as get you home / temporary breakdown kits for Motor cycles and Karts .  Only a couple squid from China includes; Inner cable  and selection of screw nipples (sounds painful  :o).

If the portion of cable you need to join isn't being pulled in a curved shape and it's straight, you could maybe either braze or weld the inner. The outer could be sleeved with some adhesive. I've never done it but would give it a go.

I think I would make a new cable, If brake cable, you will never trust it, if throttle if it gets stuck could be disaster with CVT.
Top tip, to cut bowden cable  very sharp small cold chistle onto non hardened steel, cheers, Geoff

Is it reasonable to assume this is for throttle cable? If so Halfords cycle mechanics have outer and inner "off the reel" so buy plenty so you have spares.

Thanks for the comments/ideas.

It’s to connect my remote carb enrichment to a control on the dash.   “Choke pulls” normally come with a cable that’s pre-crimped.  I’ve picked up a couple at autojumbles but the cables are too short.
