Routing help
« on: 14 September 2020, 12:48:05 pm »
Good afternoon all.

Now I'm fine routing a Circle or parts there of, I have my homemade jig made up, but I need to rout a Ellipse!
I know how to draw one, with string and two pins/nails but is there a way of creating something to allow me to rout an Ellipse?
Any help much appreciated.

I think I used the same method as drawing one, but using a point on the router in place of the pencil. Can't remember precisely how I did it, it's about 30 years ago!

Just done some research: https://www.rockler.com/learn/cutting-circles-and-ellipses-with-a-router-and-jig

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:979136

Of course the second one requires the use of a 3D printer (ahem).

Edit: Forget the printed one, tried it, and it's tiny!

Thanks Chris.

That Rockler looks exactly the sort of thing
I’m after, and I might be able to make.
Oh and thanks for printing the other one sorry
it was a bit of a waste of time!

I only printed a couple of layers before I realised how small it was and abandoned it, might be able to sort something with 2020 extrusion and connector bars for sliders. Just need to slot one piece, and fit two short pieces with right angle brackets to make a cross.

Bit more research came up with this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-Sizes-T-tracks-Slot-Miter-Track-Aluminum-f-Router-Table-Woodworking-Tool/283727909784?hash=item420f805398:g:ztgAAOSwMY9eCxSe

Can't find one from a UK supplier but could be made from track using a mitre saw or block.
