U bolts for gemini front axles
« on: 22 February 2021, 10:45:21 pm »
Evenin all!
Quick question-
My gemini front axle is 35 mm in diameter. What size u bolts do i need to hold my buggy springs on with? Ones with a 35mm inside diameter? Slightly larger? And what size should they be as regards Metric thread size- are m6 stainless bolts enough? M8? M10? Mild steel?

Ive been looking all over the place with frustratingly low levels of success; m6 thread, 35mm inside diameter stainless bolts seem reasonably easy to source, m8 that are long enough almost impossible, 37mm inside diameter is easy to find but maybe too loose.

To say im a bit confused is an understatement....

Tanks in Advance! ;c)

Mine are m8 and bent them myself on a simple mandrel.  Getting the thread in the right place was a pain - either bend and thread - made a die holder that made it a bit easier, or thread and risk bend in wrong place or damaging thread.  Internal clearance between legs was same as axle diameter.

Ah right- how do you bend them? Do you have to heat them up first to bend them or is cold forming used? And what are they made from?
Soz for being a bit thick. Im new here... ;c)

Mine are mild steel and I think I found or turned something of the right diameter.  For Marek’s we used a “universal bender” and a mandrel I turned from aluminium.   Cold formed.    My cyclekart/leaf springs sits on my axle on a perch rather than hanging underneath.  There’s probably photos in my build journal.

Groovy,: ill take a look. I made some perches over the weekend, i think ill have to configure mine the same way. Otherwise the tie rods tend to interfere with the chassis on the way to the pitman arm.

Shout if you want photos or measurements.   Chris Slade (ERA)  left his castor adjustable, at least to start with, not sure if it still is.  Hopefully Chris can fill in the details.

A M8 die nut might make threading in situ easier, start it with a socket, and finish off with a spanner: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-25mm-Hexagonal-Die-Nut-Metric-M2-M3-M4-M5-M6-M7-M8-M10-M12-1-0-1-25-1-5/261784646595?hash=item3cf394b3c3:g:jwIAAOSwVLRaW6MJ.

Edit: just had a quick look on ebay, would these suit: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/U-Bolt-M8-x24-mm-Thread-35-mm-Inside-Diam-59-mm-Inside-Height-BZP/122511906456?hash=item1c86475698:g:PQUAAOSwOVhgHAm-

<—- i actually bought some of these exact ones last week, theyre not quite long enough.. im using them elsewhere on the build though, as part of the brackets for the hartford style friction dampers ill be making next ;c)

I think ive sorted some now; thanks must go to rhys for phoning me up with some words of wisdom this morning, and stefan for his kind offer to bend me some up on his jig.. cheers chaps!!
As it is ive found some off the shelf ones that will do the trick for the test and setup phase, before i get my heavy engineering chum to weld me some bits to my axle. Hes also quite the petrolhead, and gave Bridget the Riley a lift home in his van back to my shed this afternoon after getting her all glued up in the warm at work over the weekend. Im hoping to infect him with the CK bug over the coming weeks and then get him to build something. He builds Cyclotrons for a living, and various other high energy physics equipment, so building a CK should be a piece of cake for him... at the very least Bridget fits in the back of his van an absolute treat, which could be useful... ;c)

Another source to consider.https://u-bolts-r-us.co.uk/ (If you need to use Ubolts , alternative can be flat plates, one welded to the axle, a matching one the other side of the spring and use engineering bolts)

Yes I made some supports using the Rhys design from 3x1 box with the intention of welding them to the axle once I was happy with the set up.  I use 6mm made up U bolts and so far the axle has never slipped or rotated so I haven't found the need to weld it up. The benefit is that I have been able to test a number of varying castor angles until I found the one that suited me best. I did find the handling was significantly affected when I tried different settings.

Hi Chris! I hadnt realised youd built an ERA- seeing as im building the White Riley, that means our cars are related! Ive just finished reading ‘Split Seconds’ by Raymond Mays... its a rattling good read!
I also note your location is crowborough, just the other side of winnie the pooh’s house from me. Im in the thriving metropolis of east grinstead...

Hey, we're practically neighbours!  and Geoff (Wolseley Hornet) is right in the middle!  You'll have to come for a nose when we get unlocked.

I have attached a pointer to my axle (see pic) which makes it easier to make adjustments and also serves as a visual reference to check that it hasn't rotated in use.
