Whats this other coil for?
« on: 04 September 2021, 03:05:45 pm »
I have a Launton 210 in the Renault, well out of it actually. Its on the bench and I am tinkering with it to make the Renault go better.
I have bought some bits to keep things safe, Alloy flywheel, Billet rod and some thing to make it go faster, a new Makjuni 22mm Carb with a 95 size Main jet and a 15 size pilot jet, some 22lb. valve springs and some 1.3:1 rockers arms to increase the valve lift and a 10 thou head gasket.

I should say that the engine did have a low oil sensor in the sump with a Brown wire coming out of it which I chopped of when I first got the engine. For some reason which I forget now, the HT lead was cut but I repaired that with solder and tape but it was damaged and being HT maybe there is some loss so a new 'Magneto' is going on too.

When I removed the flywheel, I found another Coil thingy, bolted to the Crankcase within flywheel the and with a Brown wire going out through a hole and down under the engine. I think this is the same wire I cut to disable the low oil sensor but I am not sure.

It's an electric start engine, (perhaps irrelevant) but that's all coming off because of the new the cast flywheel.

Does the coil thingy supply power to the low oil sensor? Anyway its coming off because again, the flywheel won't fit with it on.
If anyone would like to have an electric start on their engine just ask and you can have the flywheel, the starter and all the associated bits, just pay the postage.
I have added some piccies below which show some of the bits and pieces and the starter.

The second coil is probably for charging Adrian, since it's an electric start engine.

I don't know about the brown wire but Chris is probably right. Those tuning goodies should get the gases in and quicker. Have you got a 4 or 8 degree advance timing key?

I have a second coil in mine which delivers a 12v AC current.

Thank you chaps. I think you are probably right about charging, never thought about that.
It's a four degree offset Jim. I'll perhaps try an eight later.
Mmmmm. 12V supply eh?  Ciggy lighter or sat-nav even!

You'll need a rectifier regulator if you want to run anything off that coil, need DC to power anything.

100% off topic but funny so yeah…
I once (a very long time ago, and probably never again) got asked to modify a Marshall guitar amp head so that one of the knobs was actually a ciggy lighter so the guitarist could go for a fag break during the drum solo. Turns out cig lighters draw a huge amount of current that would have blown the usual amp transformers fuse and the only way to do it was to have a car battery behind the stacks. We didn’t do it.

With the new cast flywheel it can be used anyway so I have a spare one!
