GNASHER – 1922 GN VITESSE

I really enjoyed doing the “Dennis the Menace & GNasher” paint job,  especially faking the patina.

The Inspiration Car

GNasher is inspired by the GN cyclecars, specifically the many specials that were built using a GN as a basis. Consequently, GNasher takes inspiration from “Thunderbug” and “Harlequin” both of which were loosely based on the GN Vitesse from 1922.

The Chassis / Body

GNasher is my second cyclekart, and just like my first one “Jane” (1936 Austin 7 Twin-Cam), it has been constructed using as many surplus materials as possible that have been gathering dust in my workshop. GNasher has a glued and rivetted monocoque aluminium body tub, mated to a tubular steel subframe at the rear. Mounting brackets bolted to the front of the body tub provide attachment for the front axle and suspension. The rear subframe accepts the engine/transmission assembly, lay-shaft and rear axle.

Running Gear & Engine choice

Engine Is a Hyundai 212cc heavy duty item. Usual mods including oil level sensor and governor delete, 18 lbs/” valve springs, three-angle valve seats, 0.010” head gasket to raise the compression ratio, re-jetted carburettor, homemade exhaust and modified air filter.

Transmission is a Comet TAV-2 plus a lay shaft assembly. This allows relatively easy changing of the gear ratios. Running 219 go-kart chains and sprockets.

What’s the least and most favourite part of the build?

I am really pleased when I use up bits I have had lying around my workshop for many years. So sometimes I get really annoyed when I just don’t have enough material oddments, then have to go out and buy new material!!!!

Seriously though, I really enjoyed doing the “Dennis the Menace & GNasher” paint job, especially faking the patina.

How does it drive?

Jane worked very well straight out of the box, but whilst GNasher feels faster, he is actually currently a little slower than Jane. The front suspension needs further testing and adjustment, which should then allow his true potential to be realised.

Ongoing changes and tweaks

The philosophy behind GNasher was to keep him as spartan and minimalistic as possible, so there are no plans to add further items.  Future efforts will concentrate on getting the most out of the current package. An adjustable stop had to be added to the chain tensioner after he threw a chain on his first outing, and some further work is required on the front suspension, but hopefully that will be all.
