1932 Miller 220 Special No 77.
Now I love it, had a few teething problems with a Chinese Carburettor
first but got that sorted!
The Inspiration Car
A single seater race car which won a few Indianapolis races in the 1930s, I thought it would look good as a Cyclekart.
The Chassis
I chose the standard 3"x1" boxsection for rails and crossmembers, it tapers to front and finishes in a semi circle.
The Body
The whole body is fiberglass, I first drew the shape on a big pice of cardboard and marked wheelbase and overall length. Then on my ply table drew the width and base shape, then glued several off cuts of 100mm kingspan foam insulation boards, then fetch the electrical carving knife from kitchen! to start shaping the body and finish off with sandpaper, it's great stuff to shape but messy, then tape over with brown parcel tape to stop fiberglass from sticking to it, I fiberglassed it in three sections front, middle and back, it does take a bit of sanding after to get a good finish.
Running Gear & Engine choice
It has a 25mm Gemini axle Inc hubs brake disc and drive plate wheel, front beam is Gemini with my own transverse leaf spring from an old trailer fitted, a new Hyundai 212cc governor removed, stronger 18lbs valve springs, reemed carburettor to 16mm, 85 jet, hydraulic brake using an old Yamaha scooter calliper.
How long did it take to build?
I started in August 2024 it took 5 months, in September I had it on its wheels and body formers mocked up then I took it to my first meet at Newark kit car show and met a number of CKGB members a fine and welcoming bunch, I learnt a lot from that meet and had great feedback.
What’s the least and most favourite part of the build?
I hated the fiberglassing it's messy and itchy. I loved the first drive and painting add on little bits to make it look the part, then step back and look at it with pride.
The Little details
Adding race number, mock speedo, decals, fabricating the exhaust manifold and tail pipe from bits of upvc waist pipe going in to 4 old Vespa scooter intakes, all these bits make you smile.
How does it drive?
Now I love it, had a few teething problems with a Chinese Carburettor first but got that sorted, front suspension is rock hard due to a far to strong leaf spring but I'm living with it, my choice of narrow rims and tyres were wrong but living with that as well, it does understeer a fair bit, but with a live axle it's Fun.
Ongoing changes and tweaks
Always ongoing, one day I will sort the front suspension.
